Technology Assessments Report

Author(s):

Summary:

This report is designed to be read in conjunction with the CRC for Coal in Sustainable Development’s Options for electricity generation in Australia: Technology Assessment Report 31 published in 2003 that is included with this volume. It provides important supplementary information that builds on prior scenario modelling results reported earlier.

The aim of the research presented in these reports are to assess the most prospective electricity generation technology options that are available for Australia to 2050 and determine their implications in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and costs. The research process included:
• A technical and economic assessment of the most prospective technologies for inclusion in national electricity generation portfolios to 2050
• The design of four greenhouse gas emission scenarios under which to assess environmental and cost effectiveness
• Simulation of the portfolios using an appropriate model to determine the least cost mix of technologies or portfolio shares
• A sensitivity analysis to assumptions used in the study
