RR 69 - Review of Advanced Analytical Techniques for Coal and Coal By-product Characterisation

Type:

Research Reports

Author(s):

David French, Colin Ward, Z Li, Alan Butcher

Summary:

Coal is a complex multi-phase material, composed of macerals (the organic phases) and an inorganic component made up of minerals (the crystalline inorganic phases), mineraloids, organically bound inorganic elements such as calcium and exchangeable cations referred to as “mineral matter”. Making the most efficient use of coal requires a detailed understanding of the coal components (macerals and mineral matter), and how they interact during utilisation. Similarly, design of strategies for reducing emissions and management and utilisation of waste also require knowledge of how the component phases interact under different conditions.
