In this report a review of trace metals in the environment, with a particular focus on the importance of speciation, is presented. In addition, current progress in developing methods for the determination of the speciation of trace toxic metals derived from coal combustion, and results for the speciation of selected trace metals in coal combustion by-products is summarised.
