Research Program

CCSD’s research is underpinned by a focus on the three dimensions of sustainability - economic, social and environmental. Research is conducted in six research programs; Economic social and environmental assessment, Current power generation, Transitional power generation, Future scenarios and technologies, Ironmaking, and By-products and waste.

Coal plays a prominent role in national and international energy supply. However, with increased pressures for sustainable development, development that takes into account future as well as present needs, Australia must make more efficient use of its non-renewable resources. The transition from a fossil fuel dependant world to an alternative world, requires a full assessment of the options, impacts, probability and extent of this change. This can only be achieved with high quality research.

CCSD brings together the majority of Australia’s coal research skill base as well as experts in sustainability. CCSD researchers are recognised internationally as being at the forefront of coal research in the international science community.

The outputs from the Centre’s research are very clearly for use by industry and hence a strong focus on industry needs is evident in the deliverables from each project.
