Objectives

This program will focus on strategic options for coal in sustainable development and involves scenario identification, risk assessment and life cycle components. The program’s objectives are:

  • to provide awareness of and engagement with the international context of Sustainable Development
  • to provide information and trends in sustainable development within the context of continuing coal use
  • to identify possible transitional pathways and scenarios for coal
  • to incorporate awareness of international initiatives in the sustainable development arena
  • to indicate promising innovative areas of research and appropriate technologies for sustainable development

The program will assist in developing scenarios of energy use and sourcing. It will deliver studies comparing options for coal use and compare and contrast the social, environmental and economic impact of change compared with known or developing alternatives. It will also provide information relevant to the ongoing planning and management of the research activities of the Centre as a whole.

Deliverables

1. Established definitions of sustainable development that integrate the economic, social and environmental dimensions of the international debate.

2. Established set of sustainable development principles and KPIs

  • Global context
  • CCSD context
  • Quantify sustainable development criteria

3. Established criteria for coal’s place in future energy scenarios including:

  • Demand management
  • Extended product stewardship by producers
  • Social structures

4. Accepted models for CCSD planning and research, which

  • Quantify trends and drivers for research evaluation
  • Provide information for stakeholder forums
  • Provide case studies for technology comparisons

5. Practical tools for the coal industry to enhance its contribution to sustainable development, based on:

  • eco-efficiency; and
  • cleaner production, sustainable technology development
