Transitional Power Generation

Objectives |  Deliverables |  Project List |  Program Leader |  Current Publications

Objectives

This program will investigate barriers and issues related to greenhouse gas emissions abatement and other environmental risk factors associated with alternative power generation technologies over the next 5 to 15 years. These will include gasification technologies, fluidised bed technologies, methane capture and large additions of biomass. Input from the economic, social and environmental assessment program will enable options to be fully assessed. The program will provide research that supports the introduction and adoption of transitional power systems by providing decision support for:

  • new investment in the coal fired power generation industry
  • the development of government’s environmental and energy policy

The research program will investigate the major issues facing the recapitalisation of the energy generation industry and the impact of interactions between fuel sources and technologies inclusive of all economic, social and environmental dimensions.

Deliverables

1. Evaluation and optimisation of Australian coals for advanced technologies for domestic and overseas markets

2. Decision support for new investment and policy through information, predictive tools and involvement in demonstrations of technology

3. Facility for showcasing technologies
