Objectives

This program will focus on improving the efficiency and environmental performance of coal and coke as reductants. Recognising that ironmaking is a significant consumer of Australian coal resources, this program will investigate the options and opportunities for reducing the carbon intensity of the process. The program will focus on both metallurgical coal and PCI coal aspects of the process and will provide research that supports coal utilisation in current and future ironmaking within the context of sustainable steel making processes

The objectives are:

  • Understand the implications for coal use in new ironmaking operating regimes
  • Provide decision support service on metallurgical coal utilisation
  • Forensic coke studies in support of future metallurgical coal use

This program will deliver value through positioning Australian metallurgical coals to their greatest economic and environmental advantage and will establish the Centre as a centre of expertise for metallurgical coal utilisation in Australia. The program’s research will further coal based ironmaking in Australia and metallurgical coal exports.

Deliverables

1. Characterisation of the performance of coal in new ironmaking technologies to demonstrate the value of Australian coal

2. Scope the potential for blast furnace fuel rate reduction - Evaluation and quantification of risk factors

3. Assessment of alternative injectants in ironmaking - Participation in pilot/demonstration in waste injection

4. Assessment of options for transitional and emerging processes in sustainable iron and steel making technologie
