Transitional Power Generation

Project 3.1 - Entrained-Flow Gasification

Project Description
Gasification also offers the cleanest, most efficient method available to produce synthesis gas from low or negative-value carbon-based feedstocks such as petroleum coke, high sulphur fuel oil, biomass or materials that would otherwise be disposed as waste. These materials can be utilised alone or co-fired with coal to provide continuity of fuel quality and quantity. The synthesis gas can be used to generate electricity, or as a basic raw material to produce chemicals and liquid fuels.

To enable advanced coal gasification technologies to be introduced in Australia within the next 10-15 years it is necessary that the technology be assessed for use with Australian coals. Furthermore, any modifications to the technology that may be required to facilitate its introduction in Australia should be identified early in the process so that they can be incorporated in the final design for demonstration and full-scale plant.

This project will provide the means to maintain an up-to-date awareness of the state of development of gasification-based technologies and to understand the implications of these developments on the transition to sustainable energy systems.
