Project 5.1 - Coal Use in Blast Furnace

Project Description
Reducing the carbon intensity of the ironmaking process is best targeted by initiatives that reduce or replace carbon fuel in the blast furnace process.

The key strategy in fuel rate reduction is to operate the blast furnace at lower temperatures. The project will provide a new understanding of coke reactions and its behaviour at lower temperatures blast furnace conditions.

The replacement of carbon fuel will be addressed by understanding the impact of alternative fuel injectants. Replacing PCI fuel with alternatives provides an opportunity to leverage the use of hydrogen as a reductant. Studies will be undertaken to understand the various implications of such fuel substitution.
